January Bird List Challenge

It might be fun to keep track of the birds we see by month. It probably makes sense to keep it within the 'local boundary' although I thought about and am still open to expanding the area. Let me know what you think.

At the end of each month Ill place it in a spreadsheet and post it to the website for viewing. As we start to do this in the years to come, it might be fun to try and beat last year's record.

Ill have it in taxonomic order (more or less ). Between what you share here and what is reported elsewhere we'll build the list. Let's get it started with what I noticed today. I bet we can get over 100 species for the month.

If you're including Agassiz, add Barn Owl, Cooper's Hawk, Ring-necked Ducks, Northern Shovelers, Gold-crowned Sparrows, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, House Sparrow, House Finch, Purple Finch and of course a million Juncos.

you can add the Cedar Waxwings I saw on the first of the month and Starlings and Red Wing Blackbirds... and Northern Flickers...red shaft, both male and female...and a lone Varied Thrush

they've all visited my yard each day so far this month.

Are you including Abbotsford within the boundaries, Gord?

If so, you can add the California Gull I got at the waste transfer site off Riverside Rd on Tuesday, along with the Northern Goshawk that scattered the flock of blackbirds I was chasing all over in hope of finding any Rusty Blackbirds. Needless to say, I forgot the blackbirds and followed the raptor along Delair Road between Sumas Way and Whatcom Road until I was able to get decent looks at it.

That transfer site is a superb location for gulls, Gord. I didn't even know it was there. There were lots of them on the roof when I arrived around mid afternoon. After a while they all took off together and never returned.

By the way, that's two more count week species for the Abbotsford-Mission CBC, bringing the over all total to 106 species, 103 on the count and 3 during count week.

Two more species -- there was a male Eurasian Wigeon among a large flock of American Wigeon in the flooded corn stubble field at the SE corner of Whatcom Rd and Hwy 1 in Abbotsford on Tuesday, and a few Green-winged Teal also.

Stan, the Checklist area includes Abbotsford out to 264th. To the east we go to the Toll Booth or Allison Pass. The north boundary is just north of the Nahatlatch River near Boston Bar.

Good numbers for the Abbotsford count as well!

We saw six Greater White Fronted Geese and two male and a female Barrow's Goldeneye at Sardis Park today as well as hundreds of Cackling Geese. Oh, and you can add Coot and Pied Billed Grebe as well at Sardis Park.
By the way, this is a great idea of yours!

I have lots of American Goldfinch coming to my feeders every day. When we had all that snow I think I counted close to three dozen of them!

I forgot to mention a Downy Woodpecker is a regular visitor, too.

During the wind storm yesterday, an American Pipit decided to use my deck as a shelter. This is the first time I have had a pipit visit my yard.
