Several years ago I started going to the Jackman Wetlands in Langley to look for shorebirds. Sometimes in the past the ponds were low enough in water to have feeding areas for Shorebirds. Unfortunately the park has seen some development and the ponds are smaller and there is more noisy machines around which makes for a poor landscape for wildlife. I spoke with one woman today who told me she had not seen the River Otters for at least a year and the Beavers not since last winter, even the amount birds seemed to be significantly less in the trees. There were lots of crows and gulls though.
I was quite pleased this morning to come across many Killdeer, young and adult and even a lone Least Sandpiper who seemed to be hanging with the Killdeer.

There was still a number of Lesser Yellowlegs about.

In past years I have seen a number of Long-billed Dowitchers but today there was just the one.

The last week or so I have been seeing young Spotted Sandpipers in different places and this morning there was at least one hanging out.

I also spotted a couple Sandpipers which I believe to be Pectoral Sandpipers. Most of the birds are on the far side of the pond and in the morning there is a certain amount of haze which can make IDing them a little more challenging for me.

A large part of the park is now a busy Freezebe golf course and they are building something right next door to the parking lot and that area has now been fenced off. On the west side of the ponds the training of the heavy equipment operators has now come right down to the shore of the ponds. On the north side of the park where the owl box was they have sent a brush cutter through there and eliminated most of the small bird habitat. The birds are hanging on by a thread it seems.
