Someone sent me these photos of this bird that was coming to their feeders. They approved my request to post them here.
First off, it looks like a Purple Finch female. All looks good for one. The light stripe over the eye on one side of its head is a little odd. And of course, the apparent crest is even odder! There seems to be a little funny business in the feathers on one side too.
That's one heck of a cowlick!
What would make its feathers go that way? One might think a near miss with a cat or hawk...?
