That's a very fluffy Steller's Jay! Cute pose and nicely captured. Watch for the blue body, black head with heavy bill and a crest. They're fairly noisy as well at times! Welcome to the site and to birding!! Please continue to ask questions and feel at home.

Hi Neepgrin I don't know if it's just the way the picture came out after processing etc. but it appears like the Jay has lost its' upper mandible or maybe even hatched that way. Do you have any other pix of it?

I hadnt noticed either. wondered why he was so small. Hope these shots clarify it better. Thanks for your input.

That rounded knob sort of gives an indication he may have been in this condition for quite a while. Amazing it can survive. Thanks for posting.
