A friend passed this photo to me of some birds at Parksville, BC. The question is, what are they? Dave

When I was working on my caribou property in August- as we were excavating the wetlands I am creating. We had a large pile of peat bog. Well every morning we had a flock of red crossbills feeding on this material. Same idea as your sea weed picture. The juv looked just like your picture- except we had some females mixed in. I have a daughter in Parksville who is helping with building a home that backs right onto the estuary....I'll have to ask her if she has seen these......who ever would have thought to look for crossbills on a beach! Could they be after the salt?
