I am sending this a second time because I was having trouble figuring out how to put this message into the Identification section....I think I might have it now. I'm not sure if I am getting the photo size small enough either. We saw this Grouse at the Skihist picnic area last weekend...we think it is a Blue Grouse Hen?? Sue

Hi Sue! I had a look at the message source and you've done it perfectly. The problem is at Photobucket's end. It seems your album is empty. It's obvious you had a picture there at one point but now seems to have gone. First time Ive ever seen Photobucket lose an image (if that's what happened) The size you sent me of the buntings was fine. I think photobucket accepts a maximum width of 600 pixels. Im keen to see your picture!

I've got a lot to learn...not very computer literate. I had removed the grouse picture because I thought I had made a mistake, but have put it back on photobucket for you to see. Sue

Nice to see you posting on the site, Sue. I have problems with photo bucket too. Gord has bailed me out a few times. Everytime I think I have it figured out they change something and foul me up again!
Re your grouse...it looks like it has feathered legs (at least in the photo)....could it be a White tailed Ptarmigan?

That's a goofy looking grouse! The colour sure has a ptarmigan ring to it and it looks like there's feathers on those legs in the picture. Where is Skihist? It may help as it's tough to tell blue grouse hens (my guess on this one) apart. I wonder if this is a young grouse actually just to complicate things.
Other ideas or thoughts?

Without knowing the location, I think the bird has a more ptarmigan than grouse look to it. Kathy adds a good point about the legs, however, some grouse pictures I have seen have fairly hairy legs as well. :-. Tough one. I would love to know the elevation it was seen at.

P.S. Checking out Sibleys and Nat. Geo. Field Guide, I noticed that Sibley draws an almost identical bird as a White-tailed Ptarmigan Adult Late Summer (Jul-Oct). This is in the larger Sibley guide of all North America only. Worth checking out.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks Kathy, Gord & Dave for trying to identify this bird. The park info indicates that Blue Grouse are in the area, but this one didn't look quite like any of the ones in my reference books. Skihist Provincial Park & Picnic area is located about 5 to 6 km. East of Lytton on the #1 Hwy...elevation unknown. Sue

I stopped at Skihist Provincial Park near the end of July and saw this bird with her chicks. It used to be a Blue Grouse, but now she has a name change, Dusky Grouse.

That is very interesting...I had heard the Blue Grouse had two different names...which one it had would be dependant on its location, but none of my reference books reflect that change. Thanks Brent. Sue
