Here is another Sparrow for identification. These birds were at Writing on Stone Provincial Park in the south east corner of Alberta, almost on the southern border. Photos were taken in mid June. The birds were found both in the prairie grass but also in amongst the stone hoodoos where it was almost dessert like (prickly pear cactus grew there). As you can see from the one picture, the birds were nesting in some of the holes in the sandstone hoodoos. My first thought, at the time, was Baird's sparrows, but after sitting down with the pictures (finally) and doing some cropping to get a closer look, the closest I can come up with is a 'worn' Vesper sparrow. The white eye ring and the rust colored patch on the Scapular is what is leading me to that ID. What do other's think? This shows the bird near it's nest site. A full view of the bird or one like it. There were lots of them. Kathy
