My first visit to Sardis Park on Sunday. Two of the geese have me puzzled. Could any of you that regularly visit this park help me ID them. The first photo appears to be exotic - in my Sibley's a very close photo - describes it as an Egyptian Goose. Is the 2nd one an old worn Canada Goose or a cross of some sort? Thank-you. -Pat

Yes the first one is an Egyptian Goose...there are normally about 3 of them at Sardis Park....I guess somebody let some exotics go there at some time or other. The other one I think is a cross between a Canada Goose and a Graylag Goose....it is usually hanging around with a Graylag.....again somebody's farmyard release I think. Gord can probably let you know for sure. I know I did a double take the first time we visited that little park and saw them there.

Thanks Kathy, I googled Graylag Goose and can certainly see what you mean. Missed seeing the Graylag at the park. Did see a Greater White-fronted Goose though. - Pat

Hi Pat
I noticed that big guy was gone as well. He used to hang out with the hybrid you got a picture of.
Kathy, I remember those three Egyptian geese at one time too but during the City's efforts to minimize the ducks there, at least the tame ones, they captured them and took them to Minter Gardens or that is how I remember it. This was several years ago now. Looks like one was released again there though. Someone who reads our site sent me a picture of one or two from Mill Lake in Abbotsford (if I remember right).
