Wonder if you can tell me what this guy is I tried to get a picture head on, know he is not a House Finch, but a Sparrow--any idea what he is --(not the one that I had potentially identified as a Chipping Sparrow)   |

Looks like a Song Sparrow to me.

Thanks, both of you--he has been so elusive, to-day I decided to wait by the patio doors with camera in hand, and he finally showed! He feeds same as the Juncos, Ground feeder) saw him only once actually looking at the tube feeder--(again slow on the "camera draw") when he flew up to investigate--pecked at the plastic, gave it up as a bad job! Would have loved to have a closer "head on" shot, as the markings on the throat of the "other" bird were so much more pronounced (which prompted the Chipping ID)--will keep anything interesting coming for id and my own edification--thanks again--Al |

Hi Al, good work on getting some shots of that guy. Song sparrows, while common as the dirt they love to scratch in (as you noted) can surprisingly variable even within a small area such as our area. If you travel abroad, expect the song sparrows to look very different to the point the question "why is this a song sparrow?" comes up. While not so bad now, I can remember when I was new to birds how song sparrows were a chore. One plus though, once you know song sparrows (and other common species) very well, new, more uncommon species are more of a cinch!! Look forward to seeing more pictures! I really love seeing pictures and trying to help figure out the species too. Lots of fun! This other bird sounds rather interesting.  |
