Checked out a large roost of gulls on the Vedder River at the Vedder Bridge yesterday. Mostly glaucous-winged gulls and hybrids (around 1000) but also for sure two adult western gulls and one questionable one. I got a picture (digiscoped using a 10" tripod, ugh!) of one that Im sure is pure western. The head is really white and the wingtips a solid black. This one had very slight markings on its head and the wingtips seem a litte on the light side as well. While cameras dont alway translate the back colour of gulls accurately, I think the back on this one is a little lighter than the one above. I'd venture to guess this is a almost pure western with a little bit of glaucous-winged in its family history? Im not sure how they vary with markings on their heads, but that combined with slightly 'off' wingtips and possible lighter back makes me wonder. I dont think I could comfortably submit this bird in a Christmas Bird Count
