One of those crazy days over here with birds all over the place including a number of raptors that I am having trouble identifying, as usual This one was sitting on a piling at EaglePoint....they aren't great pictures - I've doctored them as much as I can. What is it? After consulting my books best I can come up with is a juvenile Red Tail I did see a couple of Adult Red Tails. Kathy

Kathy, as usual, I agree with your ID. It is a juv red-tail, and a hawk that often turns heads considering it's appearance and that they tend to be rather variable. Rough-legged hawks (they are around, Jeff saw one already), which are often the second choice in a hawk ID crisis, are often the light phase birds and are quite distinct with light heads and real dark belly band. In your top shot, you can see that there's no feathers on the legs, which a rough-legged would have, but often a fieldmark hard to see. That's my thoughts, other's may have some good insight as well. Good work on pictures. If it was something uncommon, there would lie the proof! Dont you love digital, I can blast happily away without the cheap voice in my head saying (with a Scottish accent) "That's gonna cost ye!"
