Hi All- We just had a new visitor during lunch hour today- a White-breasted Nuthatch. We've been observing a resurgence in numbers of Red-breasted Nuthatches in our area this year but this is definitely a new one for us and for our property. Although the WBN is an eastern species, are they somewhat common in our area?

They are pretty common up in the interior....we've seen them in the Merritt area and in the Okanagan, but don't think they are very common down here....sort of like Mountain Chickadees...they don't normally appear this side of the coast range. I'd love to see any Nuthatch....here in Harrison Mills we occasionally see a Red Breasted but even they are pretty rare....

Hi Deb, A W.B. Nuthatch in the lower mainland is a very good sighting. Not sure about Hope, but my guess is that it would be a good find anywhere this side of the coast mountains. My records show around 15-20 sightings for the Vancouver checklist area since they sarted keeping records. I saw my first one in White Rock of all places about 15 years ago. nice find!

Deb: Great sighting. As you know, I have been feeding birds in the Hope area for about 9 years, and I have never seen a White Breasted Nuthatch here. I concur that the Red Breasted numbers are up, but you definitely got a bonus there. Cheers, Thor

Hi Yesterday my husband was able to capture a few photos of the white-breasted nuthatch which includes one with a junco for scale! He's still visiting several times a day and arrives with the red-breasted nuthatches, black and chestnut-backed chickadees but is definitely more interested in the sunflower seeds than in suet or peanuts. He seems to be alone for now ...hopefully we won't have any weird hybrids in the spring .

Hi Deb,
Thanks for posting these neat pictures. Wow! I would be happy with a Red-breasted Nuthatch visiting my backyard, but a White-breasted Nuthatch! What a neat backyard bird for this area.
Thanks to your husband as well! Great pics!
