Another aspect of the Christmas Bird Count is the provision for recording species missed on count day but seen in the count circle during count week. This is defined as the three days prior to the count day and the three days following the count day.
So for example for the Dec 17 Chilliwack CBC, species seen in the Chilliwack count circle on Dec 14, 15, or 16, or Dec 18, 19 or 20 can also be reported and recorded as count week species, with an asterisk beside them.
This allows for a rare vagrant that is known to be in the area but is missed on the actual count day to be recorded if seen in the count circle during the count week. Such records are important for the CBC database.
So we all need to keep our eyes open for any goodies during the days around the various counts. Who knows what these wind storms are bringing in.

Hi all, I think this is in the Abbotsford count circle, but just in case it is not seen, there was a Rough-legged hawk--in the median west of Whatcom Rd. at 1:45 p.m. Friday December 15 Jeff

Thanks, Jeff.
Unfortunately for this sighting, our Abbotsford/Mission count day is Dec 29, so our count week would be Dec 26 - Jan 1.
But it's good to know one is around. This is a species we should get on count day but it's not a sure thing.
