Hi all: This a.m., my wife and I saw a fishing, Double Crested Cormorant on Thacker Marsh, by Sucker's Creek in Hope; ( first one I've seen there ). Also present were a female Bufflehead, two Coots, and a Red Tailed Hawk.
Late in the morning, I met up with Murray Brown, and we birded Island 22 together for about an hour. Interestingly, we saw another Double Crested Cormorant flying up the Fraser River. We also saw 3 or 4 Fox Sparrows, a Brown Creeper doing its thing up a Maple Tree, and probably about a dozen Bald Eagles, on another island in the river. Five were seen roosting in a Cottonwood on Island 22. Big flock of gulls further downstream, but, unfortunately, on private property.
Driving back along Hope River Rd, the river/creek was chock a block full of ducks, including a very large grouping of Wood Ducks.
Murray had previously birded the Cheam Wetlands, where he had a couple of Trumpeters on the mostly frozen over lake.
I tried reporting the cormorant sightings on the e-bird sight that Gord kindly provided in response to one of Deb's cormorant sightings. Unfortunately, the sight is very cumbersome. First you have to register with the usual username/password routine. Then instead of sending a written report along the lines of what we do on this site, everything has to fit into box checklists. I got about 75 per cent into this process when something went wrong and the reports were lost; obviously the site was designed by scientists!!!!! ( spoken like a true Bachelor of Arts guy !! ).
What a beautiful day to be out birding. Cheers, Thor
