hello birders this morning, in a flock of 100 or so pine siskins were two common redpolls, with 4 more being heard but not seen. also, here was a northern pygmy owl and 2 red-breasted sapsuckers. this was at our yard in the ryder lake area of chilliwack. it got me excited but not as much as the ivory gull. see you at the eagle festival. jason

Hi Jason,
Thanks for sharing. I am interested in whether or not the Northern Pygmy Owl sticks around. Was it seen, heard, or both? Great sighting of Common Redpolls as well. You live in an awesome setting. What is the yard list # to date?

Hi Dave, Cool to hear that Redpolls are also being reported your way. I and a couple of other people have seen upwards of 15 birds floating around Sooke since mid October which is really early! Sounds like Redpolls are being seen to our south in Washington State as well. If it becomes evident that it is a "Redpoll Year" where you keep bumping into some groups etc watch out for Hoary Redpolls because they do happen. I remember Jason mentioning he had one in the last Redpoll irruption a few years back. If you ever feel you have one take loads of pictures. They are a rarity on the coast but I think could be overlooked as it is often hard to get good looks at Redpoll flocks. Hope you do see one as they are super cool looking!!!! All the best and Good Birding! Birdman

I will have the camera ready for any redpolls! Thanks for the reminder. I wouldn't have seen any Common Redpolls yet this year either, if I hadn't thought of searching through the siskins on a recent mountain hike. I sure helps to keep in mind what to look for. When I see Siskin, I think Pygmy-Owl right now...I need one these not-so-kind fellows this year... Dave P.S. When I make it over to the Sooke area someday, I hope to be introduced to these Rustic Buntings, Slaty-backed Gulls, Shearwater, Fulmars, Yellow-billed Loon, etc....... Now there is a bird I would love of picture of - Yellow-billed Loon.....maybe Gord should make a "Dreams" Folder next! (Just kidding).

hello dave the northern pygmy owl usually hangs around most of the fall/winter but can be hard to find. you are welcome to come have a look any time. there are usually a few of these birds around ryder lake, i will keep you posted when i see it again. i did not hear this owl, but located it by the juncos and chickadees going crazy in the mock orange.
