Hello birders,
spent the day close to home with wind and rain lashing the area. I ventured out a couple of times to see what was out and about. The best area was Harrison Bay as there was a huge raft of ducks in a fairly sheltered area. The raft included hundreds of Canvasbacks, Lesser Scaup, Buffleheads, Common and Barrrow's Goldeneye, and American Coots. I have never seen so many Canvasbacks in one place.
At Eagle Point Park I saw my FOS Trump Swans. Also in the vicinity was one Merlin. Ducks are beginning to congregate in numbers: Gadwall, Teal, Mallard, Hooded and Common Mergs, Barrow's and Common Goldeneyes, Canada Geese, Buffleheads, and American Wigeon. There were two Harriers managing to hunt in the ferocious wind.
Gord, the trail down to the platform has been hammered by falling trees. It is going to be difficult for people to get to the EagleFest station next week with a large fir across the trail. If any of the FVRD guys are in the area, they will need a chainsaw to get rid of the trees.
Good birding, Brent Schmor Harrison Mills

Good to hear you're enjoying your new neighborhood! It's a goody with the Bay, Kilby and Eagle Point pretty much in your backyard. How many total Canvasbacks would you say were there? Watch for that Smew!! Thanks for the heads up. Ill put in about the trees at Eagle Point as top priority in light of the weekend event.

Gord, maybe a hundred. I didn't attempt a count as the wind and rain were making scoping the bay difficult. Glad to hear all the Chilliwack birders got to see the beauty on Matsqui Flats.
