New for My list and for our Island ;D Late yesterday afternoon - on the slough along Whorley Rd. Horned grebe ;D ;D ;D Not much light, so my camera was really struggling... This was the best I could get, which was frustrating cause the grebe didn't flee. I observed it from about 20 feet away for over 20 minutes ;D

Wow, good catch Wetlander, we have a lot of struggling photos that we won't toss 'cause they are the only photo that says we spotted some bird or other, at least it is totally recognizable. How many birds in your life list now?

Personal - 154 For our Island - 142 The grebe was there again Yesterday afternoon.
I've been a "stay at home" kind of birder since 2001, but am starting to get out and about this past year.
p.s. Yes, I have a number of blurry but recognizable photos. Some photos, not recognizable at all!!!

That's an impressive list for a "stay at home" birder. Your island sounds great!!! Nice to hear that the Grebe is staying around! You aren't the only "stay at home" birder, we like to stick around our area as well. P.S. at least you have photos of the birds, we think it is more important to view the bird without bothering it than to get great photos!!!!

Bruce & Joanne - Agreed!!!!!!!!! Photos are nice, but birds have rights.
Unfortunately, the Birding BC website has another example of some idiot who thinks it's funny to violently mess with wildlife and those who care for them. Also heard of an example earlier this year of a pro photographer who was hacking the brush away from a nest site so he could get a better photo. He got caught and claimed ignorance. Apparently he has been caught before - and always claims ignorance!
The ethics of observing wildlife... I like that Gord signs off with a reminder of ethics. We all need to be vigilant. Personally, I try to keep my excitement of a new discovery in balance with the comfort levels of the bird.
Tough lesson to remember sometimes. Then I see photos of some @*%#@&* throwing rocks at Brants. Okay, not so hard to remember! -Kev

Great bird, Wetlander! Keep your eyes open, you have already given me 1 life bird to add to my list - Ash-throated Flycatcher. Since I didn't meet you in person, THANKS!
