Hello all, Over the weekend I was taking my in-laws around the Great Blue Heron Reserve in Chilliwack and observed what I believed to be an immature Pacific Loon. See picture (apologies for the quality--it was in the middle of the south lagoon on a very cloudy Saturday). Any confirmations or suggestions for other species would be appreciated. Thanks. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! Scott

Scott, welcome to the site and for a great report!
Looks like a Pacific to me too. Doesn't look 'heavy' like a Common Loon and it is too dark. I think I can see a 'chin strap' there and the dark seems to come down to the eye. There's also sharp contrast between the white and gray on the neck too.
Great sighting! I might sneak over there tomorrow AM for a quick boo to see if it's still there.

Hi Gord,
I took a quick look at about 3:30 with no luck. There was a Horned Grebe in the north pond and we did manage a quick look at a Hermit Thrush.

Brent and all, my little guy and I took a quick look yesterday afternoon. It was busy but no Pacific Loon. Im not surprised especially since it wasnt there the day before. We did find a little Long-toed Salamander which my little guy loved and studied before letting him go. He sure has a soft touch for little creatures which I like. Nice Hermit Thrush and grebe!

Hi Gord, Thanks for the ID confirmation on the Pacific Loon. I've also been back to the Heron Reserve several times since the sighting, but unfortunately no further sign of the elusive loon.
