Was out at Eagle Point for most of the day for the Eagle Festival. The weather, while starting out promising, quickly deteriorated into rain for most of the afternoon.
Despite the poor weather, quite a few people showed up including Dave and his Family, Jason, Brent and Carolynn and Lew. It was good to meet you, Lew, and to see your fantastic photographs!
Due to the recent rain, the water was high forcing the eagles to the far shore. Plenty were flying around, sometimes close to the viewing area, but the scopes were well used and very necessary. I figured there were around 500 eagles from our vantage point. Other birds included a fast moving flock of 17 bushtits that came by when Dave and his family were there. Later, after Dave left, a small flock of Green-winged Teal went by. One of the males was different, lacking white where it should be white and having white where it shouldnt be. Sadly, I was disorganized and did not have my digiscoping gear which would have been needed to get any pictures.
Not long after, a merganser swam by which after some deliberation, figured it was a Red-breasted Merganser which is a very good species for our area. I got a picture with a Common Merganser which shows the difference between the two. When Jason showed up, we found a half moulted male! No pictures. Later towards dark when Brent and his wife came by, we relocated the female.
This Double-crested Cormorant was not very shy at all. It flew right in to the little bay where the scopes were set up and proceeded to hunt for fish. When he stopped for a rest, I managed a photo.
Tomorrow is the last day of the event. I hope to see some more people tomorrow and hope that the weather is better!
