My brother, myself, and our wives hiked to Cheam Peak early this morning before the holiday crowds arrived. We had a quiet, beautiful morning. We passed A LOT of people on the way down, and by now the throngs of hikers and the motorbikes have probably fully taken over. Here is the list: 1 Barred Owl (on the way up to the parking lot) 1 Bullock's Oriole (on the way up to the parking lot) 1 Varied Thrush (on the way up to the parking lot) 5 American Robin 20+ Pine Siskin 1 Black Swift 5 Vaux's Swift 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 4 Yellow-rumped Warbler 6 Gray-crowned Rosy Finch 1 American Pipit 2 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 75+ Junco 1 Northern Harrier! (rather high elevation, wouldn't you say??) 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk 2 Chestnut-backed Chickadees 4 White-tailed Ptarmigan 1 Olive-sided Flycatcher 3 Cliff swallows Here are a few pictures: Barred Owl on the way up...First bird on the list! Red-breasted Nuthatch just past the halfway "saddle" Hen White-tailed Ptarmigan at the ridge Chick My brother gets...ahem.....fairly good views and pictures of White-tailed Ptarmigan.... Note to all who have "non-birding" spouses......White-tailed Ptarmigan hens with little chicks classify as very cute, and you can bird until your hearts content. Note the deep satisfaction on their faces.....also notice the chicks head in the right corner...... If this doesn't convince your spouse, perhaps the rewarding view from the peak will. Have a good week, Dave

Nice report and pictures Dave! Cliff swallows are a new species for up there too. Nice work. Sounds like a little migration was going on with the Wilson's warbler and Lincoln's sparrow moving. Ive seen harriers up there too during late summer and am always surprised too! The area can be good for migrating raptors.
