Hey everyone,
The weather today was fantastic and I took advantage of it. Went out back to Brydon at about 9 this morning for 2 hours. The blue sky and fog were beautiful. Because of the sun it was difficult to ID all the ducks on the marsh, but there seemed to just be GW teal, mallards, and a couple gadwall. No dowitchers or wigeons today.
Here's a couple pics from the marsh:
The lagoon was pretty active with waterfowl - lots of hooded and common mergansers. I was surprised to find a kingfisher still hanging around. One of the main highlights was a female ring-necked duck on the lagoon. I've only seen one of these here previously. Here's a picture of the ring-necked duck and a couple mergansers:
Later in the walk I checked out the creek where the salmon were last weekend. There were still a few chum salmon trying to make their way upstream. There were also a couple different salmon. They were quite red on the sides with spots (instead of vertical streaks) on their backs. Are these coho salmon? Unfortunately the water was a little deeper than last week given all the rain and this is the best pic I could get:
Other highlights included 5 birds of prey - Cooper's and sharp-shinned hawk, merlin, red-tailed hawk, and bald eagle. First time I've seen a merlin here.
Overall, it was my second most productive walk here ever, with 39 species. A couple notable misses were fox sparrow, Lincoln's sparrow, and house finch.
Here's my list:
Canada Goose 150
Gadwall 2
Mallard 40
