While with my UFV photo classes in Reifel Sunday we witnessed the return of the first Saw-whet Owl to the sanctuary. Such a cute little beastie. The usual location in cedars along the west trail. Sleepy time mode. I should mention never to use flash when photographing owls as it could damage their eyes. They often roost in dark undergrowth as this one has. To bring in light I lower the shutter speed (this case 1/100 sec) as it is not moving. You can also lower your ISO to 250 for the same reason. Those hand-holding will have to raise their ISO to 2000 or more to attain a fast shutter speed. A perfect example to justify the price you paid for your tripod!

Ken fabulous shots. I like how well you showed that a good tripod and no flash can produce a very good photo. I actually think that flash does not create as pleasing photo. The bird might be brighter, but the shadows it casts behind the subject often do not work well. I agree that if one can find a way to take a gentler approach with one's photography/birding, take good advantage of it!
