Hi Fraser Valley Birders: Today, my wife and I walked up the Othello Tunnels Trail; ( Trans Canada Trail ) in Hope. We went from the Hope end. I'm guessing it is about 3 km or more to the first tunnel. We didn't go quite that far. For those unfamiliar with this trail it is the former railbed of the Kettle Valley Railway, and consequently, even though you are going uphill, ( in one direction!! ), the grade is very slight. Birding was fairly quiet, with the exception of a f.o.s. sighting of an adult male Goshawk Other birds seen, or heard were Winter Wren, Ruby crowned Kinglet, and Yellow rumped Warbler. This was my first trip up the trail since the Fall, and you can really see the affects of the winter storms. There are many downed trees, and rock slides. It really gives you an appreciation of what it must have been like to build, and, subsequently maintain the railway. Whoever maintains this trail has done a decent job of cleaning up the mess. Access to the trail from the East or West is by turning at the Chevron Station on the Old Hope-Princeton in Hope, and then right on Kawkawa Lake Road. Cross the bridge, and go up the hill to the cemetery. Turn right on Kettle Valley Road, which dead ends at the small parking lot. Cheers, Thor
