A few minutes ago a small heron flew over my vehicle right after I made the turn onto Cartmell Road. I was not able to get an ID but it was dark coloured and seemed about the right size for an Am Bittern but definatly was not based on shape and long legs sticking out. It was flying north and seemed to continue over the Fraser River. Little Blue Heron is a suspect but by no means can I say for sure. Keep your eyes open!

Since I live pretty close, I took a drive out there in the afteroon. I didn't see the bird in question. I drove along Cartmell road until I reached Island 22 and I checked the pond there along the edges for it. There is a flooded field just north of Cartmell road. If it stays in the area that could be one location to check.

Chris, too bad. I was on my blackberry so could not type much on the little screen and little keyboard. Sure was a bit of excitement seeing it come along and thinking, "Hey, that's weird!" to watching it get closer and confirming it is indeed a bit weird. I pulled over as it passed about 25 yards ahead of my vehicle but by the time I got binoculars on it all I could see was the tail as it was flying directly away. It did not seem to be looking to land and when I drove further down the road I didnt see it flying downstream. It either crossed or went upstream. If it kept going north it would hit the Kilby area. It's too bad I didnt have another 10 seconds to pull over and get a look as it passed. Whichever little heron it is, it would be a new bird for me to see! I hope someone finds it.
