Fraser Valley Birders: Hopefully, Gord won't mind this post about a pelagic birding trip tentatively scheduled for the last weekend of September.
I will preface this post by saying I have no commerical connection to the organizer ,or the operator.
Believe it or not, there is an Irish birder who has tried to organize a pelagic birding trip out of Tofino for the last weekend of September. He was actually successful in organizing a trip, until the other day when two birders from Calgary backed out, which put him below the minimum needed to go; (6).
The tentative trip is organized for either Saturday, the 30th of September, or Sunday, the 1st of October, leaving Tofino at 7:00 a.m., and returning sometime around 1:00 p.m. The planned destination is Barclay Canyon, about 30 miles offshore, with a realistic expcectation of seeing some pelagic species. The boat chartered is a 24 foot Boston Whaler, which means it can out there quickly, weather permitting.
The challenge; (adventure ) is that this 24 foot Boston Whaler is an open boat with no cabin, or bathroom facilities onboard.
Personally, I don't have a problem with this, as I used to have an 18 foot open boat which I navigated from Vancouver as far north as Petersburg in Alaska across open water.
The key, of course, is reasonable weather, and the operator won't go unless the swells are less 2 metres. The operator will give at least 24 hours cancellation notice which means you will have notice on Friday, if the weather is a problem. There is no deposit required, as the Irish organizer will take care of this.
Anyway, if anyone is interested, you can e-mail me for futher details. Cheers. Thor
