A walk along the dyke west of Appel Rd. this morning produced an interesting migrant drop out, in the form of a Brewer's Sparrow. As luck would have it, an obliging Savannah Sparrow popped up on an adjoining fence post and gave excellent comparison views.
Judging from the relatively dark malar and dark back streaking, I would think this to be a "Timberline" race of Brewer's which is a possible candidate for full species status in the future.
As I pondered the identification, he threw back his head and gave full voice to his mixed trill and buzzing song which clinched the ID.
As if this weren't enough, a beautiful male Lazuli Bunting followed us as we walked along, singing from the top of each perch.

Speaking of sparrows Chris, I see where a Black-throated was seen at Grant Narrows today, and a couple more Lark Sparrows in Princeton.
