This afternoon I witnessed something I have never seen before. A Killdeer swimming There have been a number of Killdeer in the area lately. Today there was one on the far shore and a few further up on the near shore. As I watched the one on the far shore waded in and SWAM across to the near shore. I got over the shock fast enough to manage to get a picture which I have sent to Gord...I'm not sure if he wants to post it here or on the new website as I sent an account of it in for that site. I have since scoured Sibleys Guide to Bird Behavior and My Shorebird Guide and can find no reference to Killdeer swimming. I then 'goggled' in Simming Killdeer and found a reference to them having been observed swimming in - I forget which river - but it was in 'The Auk Volumne 45 #2 - April 1928! Also seen today was the first White Crowned Sparrow of the season (at least at Eagle Point). I'm off to Tunkwa for the weekend. Hope I'll have a long list of species to report. Kathy
