hello birders
there is a great gray owl at 5380 extrom road in the ryder lake area of chilliwack. the bird was sitting on a low branch of an alder tree preening itself in the sun. i watched it for about 20 mins. and then it flew across the road into denser habitat. however, i could still see it as it did not fly more than 30 feet from the side of the road. the owl was 20 feet south of the drive way and maybe 10 feet from the road. when it was perched here it was easily seen as i drove by. 5380 extrom is basically at the corner of extrom rd and forester rd; about 10 mins. up the hill from prest rd. man, what a beautiful bird!

Nice find Jason, and good picture!
Later that day, after checking the Sumas River for the night heron and then the swans for the off chance the whooper swan was among them (still over 100 swans, all trumpeter, around there) I drove up to see if the owl was about. Lots of nice area for it to be but didnt find it. If I had more time I would have parked and walked the road a little bit.
