Not an overly exciting post, but I thought I would mention that my wife and I found a great horned owl when driving home from White Rock last night. It was perched on a power line on 192nd St. approximately around 42nd Ave. It was quite cooperative for observation through the car window.
I felt a small sense of redemption after being shut out on the owling excursion with Chris!!

Randy always nice to see an owl, especially after getting shutout during our owling outing. Out of curiosity was this at night or during the day?

Great find! However I think the alpha-code is GHOW? There is a standard way to use abbreviations. Go to this link: www.birdpop.org/DownloadDocuments/Alpha_codes_english.pdf for a list. There has been discussions in the past about using the alpha-codes. Some people like them some not. Not sure what the consensus was for this site. However as long as birders don't start using the 6-letter scientific code I'm happy to decipher the 4-letter codes. Janne Perrin Harrison Hot Springs

Hi Janne, You are correct that GHOW is technically the correct alpha code. Generally I try to avoid these because I find them confusing myself and I'm sure a lot of others have the same problem. I just made up my own abbreviation to shorten the title! That's a great reference you posted though, thanks a lot!! Randy

Thanks for sharing the Great Horned Owl sighting Randy. We regularly hear them in our area in S. Langley but still waiting to see one! Appreciate the post whether you use the 'correct' alpha-code or not..... Pat

Thats what I used to write as well for Great Horned. NHO, SEO etc... Barred (BADO) and Barn (BANO) are the tricky ones. ANd yes the Barred are the BAD Owls... Field notes...
Anyways, I am @ Brydon quite a bit, not as much as you ofc Randy, never seem to bump into you though. Even rode by your house one day, did not look like anyone was home so I continued on my NMT tour. PM me your number and we can go out some day. I will stop by right now to see if you're around.

Generally, the codes are used for field notes. As a Scot, I really appreciate not having to use as much paper and ink when taking fieldnotes. ;D ;D I also find it handy for sending quick text messages to others. Otherwise in emails or posts, the full name is preferred as everyone already has mentioned anyway.

Great sighting Randy, who would have thought 3 little letters would generate so much discussion. I was not aware that people do not like using them on this site that much, but I guess thats why I haven't seen them too much. GTK, SCR. (Good To Know, Sorry Couldn't Resist ) ;D

Great sighting Randy, who would have thought 3 little letters would generate so much discussion. Think it's bad here, it's probably a week's worth of work in the legislature. ;D
