This morning while taking the kids to swimming lessons I stopped to check a flock of gulls feeding at the corner of Evans and Sumas Central. Among them was a first winter glaucous gull. I dont think this is the same bird that was on my house last week as it had a little bit more pattern and did not limp. On the way back home we stopped and looked more in depth. There were not as many gulls there, and the glaucous wasnt there either. We counted about 40 California gulls, one western gull, 5 herring gulls, 3 Thayer's gulls and about a hundred glaucous-winged and hybrids. The 5 herring gulls are probably the most Ive ever seen of that species together. There is obviously good gull movement that's joining the California gulls as they migrate. Here are some pictures I digiscoped. Thayer's gull adult Herring gull adult breeding plumage (small!) Herring gull adult still in winter plumage (more average sized) California gull adult in breeding plumage Western gull adult who wouldn't stop preening for a nice picture.
