I used to think this referred to a fence railing (or to myself!!! 
), but I recently read it probably refers to the rails in the bird family.
I recently examined a dead juvenile sora that ran into a window and died. How thin this bird is when I gently depress its feathers! Not much wider then the edge of my hand when in the 'karate' position.
