Hi Fraser Valley Birders: There were a pair of Horned Lark at Hope Airport this morning, foraging along Jack Delair's farm rd, just east of the airport property. They haven't been seen there all winter, so one assumes they are migratory. Also a Tree Swallow has been reported in this area, probably the first for Hope this Spring. Jack's organic farm is one compost heap after another, and is just such a great magnet for birds. If anyone wants to have a look around, make sure you call Jack beforehand. Cheers, Thor

Correction: That should read just west of the airport property. Cheers, Thor

Being very new at this, and also living near the airport, but south of it, I want to learn bird identification. Red winged blackbirds are here, and robins, and some chickadees. I actually became interested in bird watching, although very casually, a few years ago when I lived in southwest New Mexico, near Silver City area. The Chihuahua desert ended there and elevations produce pinon-juniper type vegetation, introducing me to a variety of birds.

Hi, Jer--as I am sure that our esteemed leader Gord will relate when he comes "on-board"--Welcome!!! I travel frequently--and have travelled to the South, saw a lot of birds there "on the fly" as it were, lots that I never got to identify. If you have pictures, I, for one would be very interested in them, your observations--nevertheless--anything you see is definitely of interest, especially to me--a complete neophyte, but totally interested---Al

Jer: Welcome to the discussion forum. Silver City, New Mexico, eh? I bet you've seen a Common Black Hawk along the Gila River? Three of us dipped on this bird last time we were in Arizona. I ended up seeing many of them this winter in Cuba, but, then, they aren't countable on the American Birding Association checklist. It's great to have another birder living in the area, especially around the airport. If you don't know Jack Delair yet, I am sure he would be happy to meet you. Being a local, I would just drive up to his house and say hello. Tell him you heard about him through my posts on Fraser Valley Birding. Unfortunately, I don't think he has joined the discussion forum yet. As I said yesterday, his property is hot, hot, hot, for birds. When you're birding, around the airport, and you happen to see an older guy, killing himself, doing laps around the perimeter, that will be me. Make sure you say hi, and it will give me an excuse to stop, or better, yet, give me a call, and we can do some local birding together. Cheers, Thor

Hi Thor I live on Airport Road and know Jack Delair well. I'll have a go for the Horned Larks tomorrow - if this lovely weather gives us a break! I'll look out for you while your killing yourself around the Airport - but I won't join you . Thanks for the heads up about the FV Birding Club in the Standard. Mac

Mac: Welcome to you, as well, to the discussion forum. I don't know if Jack has a computer, but it would be great to have him on this forum as well. Cheers. thor
