Had to do some errands today,as the weather wasn't too figured I take a detour down vye rd in soils to look for the gyrfalcon. Got down to Bowman and hung a left. Bingo, halfway down I found him sitting on the dyke. He was between Bowman and Wellsline. Not too much snow out here, goingback home to grab my camera :-)

Martin, thanks for the update. I hope to get out there Monday or Tuesday but the weather doesn't look to promising.

Chris, I went back out this morning for a quick look with my camera but was not able to locate it again for a photo op, maybe the wind this morn kept it hiding.

Martin, glad you found it! Beauty birds, arent they. You'll get one in your lens the next time. This afternoon on the way back home from Abbotsford did the detour myself. On Vye, was this Peregrine Falcon Down Wellsline approaching Cole, I saw a bird a bit more substantial looking that had promise. I got out and rested my scope on the hood of the van and yup, nice Gyrfalcon! I then realized that the dyke ran fairly close to the trees it was in so I drove over and went for a short walk. It then flew; with purpose, almost as if it was going after something. It flew close to the ground but then came up and landed a bit further down Cole Road near the top of another old tree where I managed a bit closer look. Such a great place to look for birds. So much habitat and plenty of fairly quiet roadsides to walk along away from people's houses. No Rough-legged Hawks again. It has been a poor year for them and unsettling too as it seems to match a trend of late. Plenty of ducks around. I dont think Ive ever seen as many N. Pintails in the winter around here. Last year was similar. This Great Blue Heron could care less that I pulled over next to him. Too bad the light was so dull.

Nice shots Gord and report. When I saw it was just sitting on the dyke pathway it was larger than I thought it would be,and then when I stopped the truck it flew down into the feild.

Good work Gord! Interestingly, my brother in Northeast Asia was just commenting on how few Rough-legged Hawks are around his area this year. Usually they are a fairly easy species for him to see, but this year there are few around.
