While at Boundary Bay on Wed. I noticed large flocks of either Dowitchers or Dunlins flying over the Bay. Any way to tell which ones? I did notice another bird watcher observing them as well. He was about 700m away and my bare eyes could hardly see him. Using a Nikon 300mm plus 1.4 tele I was able to get a record shot of who this interested bird watcher was. The light of the setting sun gave his white coat a reddish tinge, but being my first sighting of a Snowy Owl, I didn't complain too much. I would have liked him to be closer though. After all - 700m is a bit far!

Hi Ken:
As a first time responder to your reports, and not having a camera and lens like you do, I want to say it's amazing how technology can zoom in like that on an unexpecting snowy owl. Beautiful and stunning indeed!

Thank you. Yes, it never seems to amaze me as well. With my eyes alone, all I could make out was a dot far in the horizon. Tomorrow I am going to try again with a 500mm + 1.4 + 2x combo. That should be 1400mm and on this camera body a 2100mm. Here's lookin a ya Snowie! (Of course most of the guys out there are seeing them 50-100 feet away but I'm not taking any chances!
