My parents wanted to go to Reifel today so I went along with them. In the marshy area near Chilliwack Airport was a Rough-legged Hawk. Below the Westham Island Bridge were a few Mallards, Green-winged Teal and American Wigeons. No Eurasian Wigeons this time. The Northern Hawk Owl is still present. I didn’t get a picture of it. However, it would not have mattered seeing as 95% of the pictures I took did not turn out. See the thread titled “A Problem” in the photography section to see why.
The Black-crowned Night Herons were in their usual location. This time one was not behind branches. The Night Heron pictures I took turned out so here is one.
All of the water was frozen so the number of ducks that were seen was less than normal. There was a Great-horned Owl roosting along where the coniferous trees are. Someone told me where a Saw-whet Owl was roosting but I never did find it. We didn’t put an extensive effort to find it though.
We walked the west side of the refuge along the dyke and I stopped to scope out some ducks far away. While I was setting it up, I saw an American Bittern about fifteen to twenty feet in front of me! A few seconds later I noticed another one right beside it. I took a lot of pictures but none of them turned out. Here is one of my mom’s pictures instead.
There was a flock of Dunlin that landed on the ice. Pretty cool to see them on ice. Picture of them taken by my mom.
I scanned the bay with my scope. It seemed that the Mallards, Wigeons and Pintails that are normally in the refuge were in the bay. Just as I was putting away the scope I saw a Virginia Rail sneak out from the reeds. I was surprised to see one. I heard and saw a few Marsh Wrens during the walk. The usual smaller birds were seen as well.
While we were leaving a Wilson’s Snipe flew right in front of our vehicle. Poor little guy almost got hit.
