Bryan and I walked counterclockwise around Katzie Marsh at Pitt Lake today. Feet firmly on trail as per previous posting this was our immediate reward: Bet that'll never happen again!!!! Bryan was able to take several unhurried shots since the owl was alert but unbothered. Such a treat for us. In the same area, but several hours later, a light blue jay-sized bird flew by between us and Katzie Marsh. We could only glimpse it between the trees as it travelled east at a high speed. It had a very direct flight path. It didn't look like a Stellar's Jay but try as we did we couldn't see where or if it landed! Scrub Jay crossed our minds. Thought we'd mention it in case others are in the area birding. Otherwise the mountain views were spectacular and there were plenty of ducks, swans, geese, and eagles to keep a birder happy! What a little beauty! Way to capture it in a classic owl pose.
Interesting sighting on the jay too. With all the Scrub Jays around, sure is not a bad guess!
A good area to bird there. It's been awhile since Ive been there but I remember enjoying it considerably.

Wow I was pretty happy with the Kestrel I would have been over the moon at the sight of an owl. I take it by 'immediate reward' that you spotted this soon after embarking on your walk - I find that as well - that most wildlife seen to be near trail/roads.

Very nice. It is always exciting to see an owl and it looks like you just had an exciting experience.

Yes Dave, the owl was within the first km of the dyke trail. Your Kestrel pictures are great. Janet
