I know that certain birds are banded, but why would anyone band Grosbeaks - a songbird? I captured this banded Black-headed Grosbeak at Reifel last Sunday.

Nice picture Ken.
I'm not big on banding. I haven't done indepth research on the effect of banding on birds but I have done enough to give my opinion on it. It's a simple question of do the ends justify the means? I look at certain banding site conclusions and most of them say that location A is a great site for migrating and breeding birds. Well good field work could come up with the same conclusion.
I read an article months ago analyzing banded individuals vs non banded individuals of a specific species of penguin, and they found that the banded birds were dying sooner than normal.

I think I favour good field reporting as well. Less stress on the bird, and I think everyone knows Reifel is a great breeding location. Thanks for the comments Chris.
