On Mount Seymour today we saw this: Guess who made the pretty pattern on the willow . . . Answer below Here's who: We've never noticed little waffle squares like this before! We watched this sapsucker drink sap from the uppermost squares, then saw him/her chisel out new squares and eat some of the cambium while he/she was about it. The sapsucker looked bedraggled: We wonder if the bird recently bathed, or got sap on its head feathers, or is in some kind of molt. Any ideas why? Nicely captured guys.
I never knew about this until 3 weeks ago when we were watching the BBC Life of Birds Documentary in class and they showed this specific behaviour.
It wouldn't be molting but I'm not sure what would cause that.
