hello birders there was an adult white-throated sparrow at cheam lake wetlands this morning; about 20m down the loop trail. you could here it calling from the start of the trail. i am not sure, but this might be the first sighting of one at cheam lake. gord should know the answer to that. the two horned grebes were close to the viewing platform also here were a merlin and an osprey and a few yellow-rumped warblers. jason ryder lake,bc

Jason, good find. There is a record for a white-throated sparrow for the lake, but it is an older record from the early-mid 90's or possibly even older. I seem to remember seeing a list from the 70's with a white-throat on it. Denis would probably know. Either way, nice to have a fresh new record. Need to update that checklist!
That's a good date for Osprey as well.
Your (or anyone else!) task, if willing to accept, is to find a swamp sparrow. There's a species Im sure passes through. Too bad Cheam Lake is so cold in the winter/falls or I think more smaller birds would hang around and winter there. As it, (generally speaking) the Park is good for passerines (perching birds) late spring, summer and early fall and good for waterfowl fall, winter and spring provided it doesnt freeze.

hey gord i was actually with denis at the time and he thought it was the first record. we were both looking hard for a swamp sparrow but no luck, but it is just a matter of time until one pops up there. jason ryder lake,bc

It must have been a record from quite some time ago then. Really nice to have a fresh one!

I checked my records for Cheam and had a record by Lynn Miller on Sept 18, 1993. I believe it was a field trip with the CVN club. Denis

Denis is correct. I remember seeing a White-throated Sparrow there, but I have not had a chance to review my old records. The date sounds accurate.
