My 'across the road' neighbour has reported seeing a White Breasted Nuthatch in his yard several times in the past week or so. He say's it is with a flock of Chickadees. Everytime I hear Chickadees I have been looking and looking to see if I can spot this Nuthatch but so far no luck. Has anyone ever heard of a White Breasted Nuthatch being seen in the area I hestitate to add it to the area's 'species' list until I can see it for myself or someone gets a picture. I've had several Black Throated Gray Warblers around in the past week but that is about as exciting as it has got. Water levels in the Chehalis Estuary are about as low as I can remember, just came back from a walk to Eagle Point park, about all I saw were a mixture of Crows and Ravens all over the flats, 4 Canada Geese, 1 Bald Eagle way out, about 14 Mallards, 1 Killdeer and that was it. The riparian habitat was equally quiet: a flock of about 8 or 9 Robins, heard a Song Sparrow, 1 Towhee, 1 Lincoln Sparrow and 1 small Hawk, I think a Sharp Shin flew past. That was it. Kathy

Certainly not impossible, Kathy. There has been sightings in the past years. Not a yearly occurance from what Ive read, but it has happened. Keep your eyes open. Do you get many red-breasted nuthatches in the area? Not that Im thinking it's that, but if so, then your neighbor's probably seen them before which would be good for this to indeed be a white-breasted! I look forward to hearing a confirmation report from you! Good luck.

We don't get a lot of Red Breasted Nuthatch over here, in fact the last one seen was in this same neighbours yard on the same tree as the White Breasted has been on. Since then we've heard one occasionally, but haven't seen any. The Red Breasted was very co-operative, my neigbhour called me and it posed very nicely for pictures. The White Breasted isn't as co-operative. Certainly my neighbour is familiar with both species. Guess I'll add it to the list and hope it shows up long enough for photo verification.
