Went out this morning at 7:30 to see what's happening at Cheam Lake.
Upon getting out of the car at the parking lot, I wasnt disappointed as there was a considerable amount of activity in the willows and cottonwoods. This consisted of chickadees, warbling vireos, yellow warbler, Wilson's warbler, orange-crowned warblers and over 6 western tanagers.
The lake was somewhat quiet but the waterfowl numbers will start to build soon. Between juveniles and adults, I counted well over 35 pied-billed grebes! A park record.
The hotspot was the parking lot as each time I passed there seemed to be a new bunch of birds, usually warblers, vireos and tanagers.
Down on the Loop Trail, I mused to myself that there should be a Lincoln's sparrow around as they are usually around on this date on their way by on migration. Not seconds later, a little group of three were spotted.
List of species and number of individuals seen in two hours. Often people ask where the wildlife is when they visit the park. They dont believe me when I say that there is probably between 50 - 60+ bird species in the park during the day at this time of year. I got 42 in the morning's effort.
