We walked the Matsqui dyke from Beharrell Rd to the east end this afternoon. Best sighting was 7 Western Grebes on the river near the start, just in time to start building interest in the Christmas count.
We also had a Lincoln's Sparrow and several White-crowned Sparrows, of both gambelii and pugetensis subspecies. I heard songs of both subspecies as well, at least their best effort for this time of year.
Other than that, and the usual gulls, crows, chickadees, kinglets, robins, yellow-rumps, juncos and House Sparrows, there wasn't much, except a Cooper's Hawk and quite a few Northern Flickers. I heard Evening Grosbeaks several times.
I couldn't help but gaze often at Mt Cheam beckoning in the distance.
Beautiful afternoon, except for a couple of yahoos tearing around on dirt bikes, despite the signs.
