When walking home form thr Post Office last evening about 9 p.m. I found a western Wood Pewee lying dead on the sidewalk on Poplar Avenue here in Harrison. It's breast bone stuck out like a keel. I believe it to be a juvenile as it lacks dusky smuges under the tail. I assume it starved to death.
There are few bugs or mosquitos around Harrison despite the presence of the Miami River. Could be that West Nile virus abatement with Bt really does a job! Dr. Bert Brink, Professor Emeritus and long time member of VNHS and FBCN, had plenty to say against wide spread treatment of waterways and the harm it could do to all insect life when the first wave of hype started some years back. I'm probably over reacting to one dead WWP but who knows?

You do never know Janne, but documenting such finds could start to show trends over time. If this is a problem, it will be the insect eaters first, and a wood-pewee would feel the pinch if insects were suddenly harder to find.
