Spent 8 hours this weekend out in the canoe. Think we have covered every square inch from the Harrison River to Morris Valley Road, up the Chehalis as far as we could get and down past Eagle Point Park. The two days were quite different, sunny and hot on Sat. with the birds being very 'quiet' and cloudy with occasional showers on Sunday. Saturday we did the area closer to the Harrison and the Chehalis, Sunday we did the area closest to Morris Valley Road - went by Eagle Point Park both days. Here are the results:
Raptor types:
Bald Eagles - 3 adults - 1 juv.
Osprey - 1 each day
Red Tail Hawk - seen on Sunday
Turkey Vulture - 2 seen on Sunday
Ducks:
Mallards - Sat. saw a total of 12, all females or young except for one male in moult. Sunday saw 1 female with 2 very young ducklings
Common Merganser - saw a raft of 28 to 30, all females - finding it very strange that we are not seeing any with young. A few years ago you couldn't go out there with out seeing all sorts of females with large groups of young.
Wood Duck - not positive of ID but saw what appeared to be 2 young wood ducks - going by their call more than anything as they disappeared really fast into the grasses.
Cinnamon Teal - that pair was still out there.
Shorebirds and other 'water' types:
Pied Bill Grebe - continue to hear them out there but still haven't spotted any.
Great Blue Heron - still lots, saw about 10 on Sat. only about 4 in the area we were in on Sunday.
Spotted Sandpiper - these weekend they were all in the Eagle Point Park area and numbers included 3 young ones - finally got a picture ;D but haven't downloaded yet to see if I actually managed to catch it or not.
Wilson's Snipe - Sat. didn't hear a single Snipe - Sunday they were everywhere, even managed to see one.
Canada Geese - Sat. we only saw a few in small groups of 5 or 6, Sun. they were in a big bunch of a 100 or more, still molting so not flying.
Others:
Tree Swallows - by far the most predominant species out there. Only 1 martin box and 1 nest box still 'active' the youngsters are out and about.
Barn Swallows - not as many as Tree but still a lot of them out there, Sunday saw 3 youngsters on a tree branch and in the boat launch there were adults still gathering mud for nesting material.
Norther Rough Wing Swallow - saw a few
Eastern Kingbird - Sat. didn't see any which sort of blew my theory on the nest up the Chehalis. Sunday, saw 1.
Marsh Wren - they are everywhere - dispersed pretty evenly over the area
Common Yellow Throat - as many or more than the Marsh Wren
Yellow Warblers - saw several, including one feeding a baby cowbird.
Red wing Blackbirds - still quite a few although not as many as we saw a couple of weeks ago
Cedar Waxwings - still lots, both 'flycatching' and eating berries.
think that pretty much covers it except for all the species in the backyard.
