Hi all, I was on my break at work today around 9:30 a.m., when I heard a strange sound. I figured it was probably a starling, but then after about 5 minutes I saw something white flying. One of the other guys described it as white/silvery. It had very stiff wingbeats, and definitely was not a white pigeon. To me it looked like the size of a small to medium hawk. So, with that assumption, my closest guess was a white phase gyrfalcon or, more likely, a white-tailed kite. I ruled out gyrfalcon because it was not flying very fast. However, I am not sure whether or not the white-tailed kite has stiff wingbeats. I listened to the sound of a white-tailed kite at identify.whatbird.com/obj/29/_/White-tailed_Kite.aspx, and the first three sounds on the recording sound similar to what I heard. I am really confused, but also hopeful because it sure looked like a different bird, whatever it was! Any ideas anyone? If anyone has the time, it was on Prest Road south of the freeway, between the narrow bridge and Mcguire Road. There are a bunch of yellow barns and a butterscotch house on the east side of Prest where I work. Also there is a row of very large oak?? trees along the driveway. It sounded like the bird was in those trees before it flew. Oh, here's the address--7379 Prest Rd --Jeff

Sure has my attention! I will check the area on my way to work to see what I can see. Of the two birds you're considering, the kite would best match what you've seen. As I can remember from the one I saw in Pitt Meadows, the flight is somewhat stiff, like a tern flight.
Thanks for the heads up!!
