Every year about this time I notice the starlings flying. (and the rest of the year they just walk...? ) They almost float around chaging direction rapidly as if chasing flying insects. They do 'hawk' (flying from a perch to grab a flying insect and returning to the same or nearby perch like a flycatcher) as well, but they seem to spend a great deal of time flying around apparently feeding on things in the air much like a swallow would. I cant say Ive observed this behaviour at any other time of the year except for these few weeks in the fall. Has anyone else noticed this? Quite adapable little devils if they are indeed taking advantage of a flying food source.
