Fellow Birders: I scouted out the Wetlands after school, in anticipation of the bird walk Jason and I are doing for the Hope Mountain School on Sunday. Surprisingly, I was the only one there. Luckily there were lots of birds. My Flycatcher dilemna: I think I had a LEAST FLYCATCHER in their traditional area heading up the slope after crossing the marsh. Size, shape, and colour matched, but it wouldn't sing; just called. Anyway, it's nice to know they might be around. GRAY CATBIRD was heard in the picnic area, in the dense undergrowth, but I couldn't get it to show itself. YELLOW WARBLERS were prevalent, as were BLACK HEADED GROSBEAKS. Had a hard look for HOODED ORIOLES, previsouly seen in the Wetlands in another year, but no luck. Lots of BULLOCKS, however. SWAINSON'S THRUSH were everywhere, as were WESTERN WOOD PEEWEE. Saw three EASTERN KINGBIRDS, many CEDAR WAXWING, TREE SWALLOWS, MARSH WREN, 2 HAIRY WOODPECKERS, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH. Forgot to look for Gord's MUTE SWAN. Looks like Cheam Wetlands is peaking. Thor

Good scout Thor. Would be great if the least flycatchers showed up again! A promising sighting. Good work on the catbird too. I was there all morning, but didnt hear or see it myself. There were 2 olive-sided flycatchers this morning though.
Look forward to Sunday.
