The wind is not my friend, nor probably yours either. When using a tripod, the wind causes vibration that affects the sharpness of my images, even when I am shooting at a high speed. What are the options assuming you have maxed out the ISO to 1600 and are shooting at 1/000 sec. In this case, it may be best to hand-hold and rely on the lens IS to increase the shutter speed. The wind does not seem to affect my camera support arms the way it affects my tripod. Keep your elbows close to your body and breathe slowly. Shoot at the start or end of your breath. I often use my car as a wind blind. I have often opened my doors and used them block the wind as I illustrate below of my friend Arnie doing. I am sure most of you have rolled your window down and shot right from the car. With the IS setting on, and a coat to add as a tripod support, that technique works well. I have often used this method to photograph a shy roadside animal as a first series of shots before it scampers away into the bush. If it stays after the first initial shots, out comes the tripod. Rule - You take what you can get.
