I have always had trouble telling the difference between the Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers in the field. While in Brandon, Manitoba in December, I was able to capture both at the same location. The Downy (top photo) is smaller with a shorter beak than the Hairy (bottom photo) . The Hairy was also a little more photographer shy.
