Had a Lincoln Sparrow in the backyard this morning - along with a Gold-crowned and a White-crowned. Saw a Savannah over at Eaglepoint Park yesterday.

Managed to get this photo of the Lincoln Sparrow today - actually I think there were two in the yard this morning. Photo taken with my new Pentex Digital SLR which I am using on all manual (including the focusing) at the moment because I haven't really got a clue as to how to use it. Kathy

Wow, that's a really nice shot! What lens are you using Kathy and about how far away was the bird?
I like using manual myself and only flip it to automatic when I dont have time to adjust exposure on a subject that is only around for a second or two. The other dozen features I never use or at least not yet.

I'm using a Pentex SMC 80-320 mm lense that I had for my film Pentex SLR. I was sitting about 8 to 10 feet away. We designed the back yard with a series of small decks that step down and we have a stream running along side them into a fish pond. This stream is a great attractant for the birds and I spend literally hours sitting with camera poised waiting to see who will come for a bath.
You are right about using the manual - I find it far easier to focus on what I want ie the bird, instead of finding out later that the camera focused on a twig or something.
